Why there might be fossil fuels on Mars (humor)

It seems like it’s getting harder these days to fill up a tank of gas without taking out a loan.  And it’s going to get worse.  Not only has oil topped $100 a barrel again, but gas prices are expected to start their summer surge early, hitting $3.25 a gallon in a matter of weeks.  How far this is going to go I hardly dare to imagine, but some experts say we’ll top $4.00 per gallon by mid summer.

Which brings me to my point about petroleum being a non-renewable resource.  We may have a lot of it now, but in a few centuries it will all be gone. There are alternative fuels out there, but so far they’ve failed to really compete with fossil fuels for cost and effectiveness.  Fortunately we have 200 hundred years to develop them, and hopefully we’ll make some major break-throughs in that time period.

But what if we don’t? One possibility is that we could go to Mars to get oil if we run-out here. Although most scientists suggest that Mars does not have any petroleum, we now have new evidence that could change the commen hypothesis. The discovery of the SkyPath Scrolls in the last year proves that there used to be life on Mars.  The ancient Romans who sailed there kept extensive lists of flora and fauna, until the geography was inexplicably changed five hundred years ago during the Martian Apocalypse. Although we’re still not sure exactly what occurred, it is possible that this planet-wide catastrophe converted the extensive plant/animal/human life into fossil fuel reserves. If that’s the case, I don’t see any reason why we can’t go up there and mine them.

But there’s no hurry. We’ve got 200 years.

The return of the muse is not a news source. This post relates to the imaginary universe of the SkyPath Crusade.

The entire SkyPath Crusade is posted at http://skypathcrusade.wordpress.com  Only go there if you feel like reading a book-length epic poem.

Otherwise, just keep browsing this website. Or: I just started rewriting the epic poem in prose as a serial novel. You can read the first post at http://returnofthemuse.wordpress.com/2008/03/22/space-crusaders-1-a-serial-novel-about-romans-in-outerspace/
